Quantum Dao

It is an uncanny coincidence that around two and a half millennia ago, ancients from civilisation apart, unaware of each other, told us remarkably similar things about existence, reality, stuff like that. They relied on nothing more than the power of human perception and contemplation.

The Buddha, aka Siddartha Gautama (c. 563 - c.483 BCE) realised without microscope or telescope that there are tens of thousands of bugs in a single drop of water, and that there are countless worlds out there. These amazing realisations took us another two thousand years to verify. A central tenet of his philosophy is that reality isn’t what it seems to be, and that all dharma is the result of our “heart”, perception, desire. The Buddha taught us repeatedly that there really — or not really — is nothing out there. The concept must have been wildly incredible before quantum mechanics.

His contemporary way over in China Lao Zi (aka Lao Tsu, c. 571 - c.471 BCE) gave a similar worldview in 5000 words — all that he had left in writing. The opening sentence in his Dao De Jing is “The Dao that can be explained is not the real Dao.” Nature’s way, the Dao, absolute reality, is far beyond the paltry capabilities of human languages. Dao just is, but sorry, not necessarily the way we think it is. We might laugh, as he predicted: “On hearing the Dao, a wise man would practice; an average man would be baffled; the idiot would laugh it off.”  Ha.

Hongkong Cultural Rev -Conclusion

Day 7 - Final Declaration
Dear Comrades,

Our revolutionary journey is coming to an end. I ask myself why I started this revolution. Just something to do, of course. In addition, there’s a tinge of nostalgia. I’m after all at my prime for nostalgia.
This small small world is a big big place to me. There are a number of places I can happily call home. But Hong Kong is the first home for me, and my daughters. I was once very proud of it. My parents' generation struggled and created hope right here during a turbulent time. They showed a tenacious spirit which people still talk about. They held hands with fate, and changed destinies. They also changed Hong Kong.

But lately, my relationship with this home has become awkward. Many of my friends feel the same. These imminent retirees are reluctant to offer their experience and advice to a community to which they owe their success, and love. They opt to withdraw instead, with mouths shut.
So I decided to revolt from the top secret Fragrant Chamber in my apartment.
I realised this is a local movement. Anyone unfamiliar with HK news may have difficulties making sense of some of the messages. This Final Declaration is quite different from the Chinese version because some nostalgic lamentations could only be felt by people who I grew up with. There’s only so much a family letter can be understood by friends.
I’ve been accused of being too critical and sarcastic about HK’s simple-minded views on democracy. Perhaps I should be more encouraging instead. But what does it matter? Only a few would hear anyways.
I see ironies everywhere I look in today’s wonderful world of Homo sapiens. Most Americans I know are gregarious and generous, loud and enthusiastic, quite similar to Hongkongers. But their government is killing and looting with unchecked avarice, demonising the victims through a powerful propaganda network, flooding the planet with pollution, fake money, dubious morality and triple standard. How could a bunch of good people have created such an abominable empire? But according to the New York Times, the US Congress has an approval rating of only 9% (say nine percent! Okay, those who find uncooperative poll figures disturbing may arbitrarily double it to 18%, fair enough?) Why would anyone imitate such an evidently unrepresentative and flawed system?
When writing Man's Last Song, I sat by the waterfront one day, wondering how the magnificent view might look in Song Sung's world. My mind drifted off to a song from younger days: "Who had polluted my childhood landscape, giving it the tawdry face that I see . . ." The sentimental attack nearly brought a tear; even the equally deranged fellow squatting nearby, fishing for sickly looking fingerlings shimmering with petroleum, was worried.
I was not saddened by change. Everything changes all the time. I was disappointed by our mindlessness in this change. Why can’t we learn from other's lessons instead of screaming empty slogans that most people never give any thought to?
I know why! Because Hong Kong doesn't have democracy the same way!

Be thorough in copying Democracy. Don’t think too much! Listen to mentor! Be ready to sacrifice and sink together as one glorious bundle!

Democracy Biggest! Other Talks No Sense!

Hongkong Cultural Rev (Day 6) Persecute!

Day 6
Dear Comrades,
A revolution is toothless without some means to persecute. For the time being, we use the ICAC and judiciary review to that effect. But they are not dependable in the long run. We will need our own Rat Centre and the power to conduct democratic public trials to maintain momentum in the reporting of despicable neighbours, loathsome bosses, threatening competitors and sarcastic anti-revolutionaries. Let’s unfurl their dirty laundry regardless of size. Nothing is too trivial: the tiniest skid mark on a pair of old briefs is prime time news in this town, and can help to bring down an important enemy!
Comrades, tomorrow will be the last day of our revolution. I will make an important declaration.
Until then,  Vive la revolution!

Do not underestimate the Big Big power of claptrap and nitpicking. Use them well to destroy the enemy.

In the long run, we need a Rat Centre directly controlled by us to process anonymous reporting and democratic Trial by the Masses. The ICAC is not a long term solution.

Hongkong Cultural Rev (Day 5): Free Press

Dear Comrades,
I’m particularly joyous today because I’m going to talk about the mass media in Hong Kong. In this area, we enjoy resounding success. In the newsstands, TV, radio, there’s practically only ONE voice left — the loud and virtuous voice of freedom and democracy! All undemocratic hogwash have effectively been drowned out. Remember the Poster a couple of days ago? Small Brain no problem. Big voice makes OK. The mass media has refined this to perfection. We should all learn from their example.
BUT comrades! Don’t lower your guard! We must continue to fight, to safeguard Freedom of the Press and keep dissenting views out. They are propaganda or the result of self-censorship, threatening to undermine freedom and openness. Please remain alert.
Vive la revolution!

Fight for Freedom of the Press! Against Self Censorship! Down with all other voices!

HK mouth water can offend well water, river water and tap water; but not ocean water. This is knowing your place; very good.

(n.b.:Now, I'll try. "Mouth Water" is saliva, a Cantonese metaphor for "yapping or claptrap". Someone full of shit has lots of mouth water. A Chinese PM once used an old aphorism "river water don't transgress well water" (but reversing the flow to gently remind us of size relativity) to tell HK people to go mind their own business. HK depends on the mainland for tap water, a fact that many take for granted as usual. Ocean water is connected overseas. HK media is somehow dubiously forgiving with blatant human right abuses by countries over the ocean, but not quite so indulgent with China. However, if this still doesn't make sense to you, forget it. Just read the English word there: GOOD!!)

Hongkong Cultural Rev (Day 4): Brainwash

Day 4
Dear Comrades,
Our revolution is propelled from two bastions: Education and Mass Media. Let’s only look at education today. We have made impressive progress in this area. Most of our students worship a makeshift replica of a mainland knockoff of the Statue of Liberty. Few dare to speak independently on campus these days, even fewer think for themselves. This is good - entirely in accordance with HK’s academic tradition and recently sprung up Core Values.
But lately, counterrevolutionary forces are trying to sneak alternative views into textbooks, suggesting pros and cons in an electoral democracy, inviting the students to think! This is blatant propaganda! The goodness of democracy, like the Genesis, is absolute, beyond analysis. That’s why we allow the Bible to be taught in schools. To question the unquestionable merits of democracy is blasphemy. It’s brainwashing and anti-brainwashing!

Although someone has assured us that in attempting to brainwash the brainless, they are wasting their time but, comrades, just in case,
we CANNOT compromise on this one!

Vive la revolution!

Teaching students the pros and cons of democracy undermines our Revolution. It’s brainwashing and anti-brainwashing. Must be brought down anyways!

Down with brainwashing students with many ideas! Focus on learning Democracy the loudest way!

Hongkong Cultural Rev (Day 3): Long Live Ignorance

Dear Comrades,
In the old days, ignorance was involuntary, but a bliss.
In today’s Hong Kong, ignorance is voluntary, a privilege, as inalienable a human right to us as hand held video games. But we are less happy. Why? I’d give you the same answer for any of your ten thousand woes:
Because we have no democracy!
Right? RIGHT! Right right? RIGHT RIGHT!
Elsewhere, ignorance has become an unstoppable global political power, creating not only bliss, but self-righteous delusions.
If they can do it, we can do it!

Vive la revolution!

Long Live the Greatestestestestest Unity of the Ignorant Class!

Don’t be ashamed of ignorance. Be brave and uncompromising! Keep believing we’re right and make our own truth!

Small brain no problem. Big Voice makes OK. Must practice and train plenty.

Hongkong Cultural Rev (Day2):Illegal Structures

Day 2

Dear Comrades,
Of course a revolution cannot be completed in one day. According to my latest estimate, it could take up to seven days, a full day more than it took our Christian God — the Heavenly Father of many secular democracies — to manufacture the universe. So, don’t underestimate this momentous undertaking. Study today’s Big Character Posters well, put them into action!
Vive la revolution!

All People United to Dismantle Unauthorised Structures. Chaos is Double Good!

No soft hands in political struggles. Be imaginative: Anything can become illegal structure.
